Abstract

The method used in writing this article is a review and analysis of a collection of research journals and books related to tannins, saponins and fermentation in the rumen. Methane gas is the second largest producer of greenhouse gases after CO2 and has a heat retention capacity 25 times greater than CO2. The formation of methane gas is an indicator of suboptimal fermentation in the rumen which has an impact on slow livestock growth. Tannins are polyphenolic compounds originating from plants that have a bitter taste, chelator compounds that can be used to protect proteins and various substances. Saponins are steroid glycosides, or triterpenoids, found in many plants. Saponins are able to form stable compounds, such as soap foam, in aqueous solutions. Saponins are sugars containing glucose, galactose, glucuronic acid, xylose, rhamnose or methylpentose which combine to form hydrophobic glycosides and aglycones (sapogenins), namely triterpenoids and steroids. The combination of these two extracts can be used to suppress the growth of protozoa and methanogenic bacteria that produce methane gas. Supplementation of tannin and saponin extracts as feed additives for ruminant livestock can optimize fermentation that occurs in the rumen and reduce methane gas emissions.
